Museum Offers Free Memberships to 100 Friends of History
Northport is full of history worth preserving, and the Northport Historical Society and Museum is where so much of that story lives. I’m writing to invite residents of our area, who are currently not members, to become members and to reconnect with a resource that belongs to all of us.
As a longtime member and a board member for the past twelve years, I’ve had countless conversations with neighbors right on Main Street often with people who have lived here for decades. When I ask whether they’ve ever visited the Museum, I’m frequently surprised by the answer that many haven’t been inside since grade school, and some lifelong residents have never explored it at all. Those conversations always remind me that the Museum is a hidden gem, and that a simple invitation can open the door.
That door is about to open wider…literally. The Museum is currently closed for construction while we are completing renovations that will make the building accessible to everyone in our community, including a new ADA-compliant entrance and interior improvements such as an accessible restroom and a first-floor layout designed to welcome all visitors.
When the Museum reopens, it will do so with a new exhibit, and as always, admission is free. The Society also offers programs that are both fun and meaningful, including the iconic Garden Tour, Historic Harbor Tour, Sundays at the Society lectures, Irish Pub Nite, Holiday House Tour, and walking tours of the Village as well as popular members-only events.
To encourage new participation, I’d like to sponsor 100 new individual, one-year memberships at no cost - first come, first serve. Consider it a chance to enjoy the Museum and its programs as my guest, and to help support the work of preserving Northport’s history for future generations.
To register for your free one-year Individual Membership (new members only) visit www.NorthportHistorical.com click on the membership tab at the top and select “100 Friends of History” on the dropdown menu. Click on the “100 Friends of History Application” and complete the form.
I hope you’ll take me up on my offer and that your visit marks the beginning of a renewed connection to the history we share and our love of Northport and East Northport.
Sincerely,
Dennis Tannenbaum
