About The Heritage House Program
Homeowners with historic houses in Northport Historical Society’s area of interest, which includes Northport, East Northport, Fort Salonga, Asharoken and Eaton’s Neck, are invited to participate.
For a donation of $750, volunteers from The Society will conduct research at the Suffolk County Clerk’s office in Riverhead and document the history of the home and then install a Heritage House plaque on the front facade of the historic structure.
Benefits

You will receive a 7”x 10” plaque will be cast in silver on a blue background with the Northport Historical Society logo, name(s) of the original owner, year built or circa, and the builders name (if found).
- The plaque can be installed on the house or on lawn stakes, and remains with the house.
- The Heritage House Plaque Program does not restrict the homeowner to make changes to the home's interior or exterior.

Access to the in-house 1978 database of the 220 houses of historic status.
- To provide information and support of owners of historic houses that face unique challenges.
- Recommendations of Craftspeople of woodworking, radiators, squeaky floors, steam heating, etc. who maintain historic structures.
- A sense of pride that your home is part of the greater Northport community of historic homes and is recognized with this distinguished plaque.
The Process
- Northport Historical Society will conduct the research of your house with our in-house database and at the Suffolk County archives in Riverhead for its history that will include the original owner, year it was built, and the builder. Any unique history uncovered will be shared with the applicant.
- Any information, facts, or stories from the past that you could provide to assist in the research is greatly appreciated.
- This process can take a few months. You will be notified when your plaque is ready.
Qualifications
Your home must be circa 100 years old and located within the community of Northport, East Northport, Asharoken, Eaton's Neck, or Fort Salonga.
How To Begin
- Determine if your house is on the existing survey.
- If your house number is on the survey and you are interested, receive an email copy of the house file.
- If the House is not on the registry, you can apply for a slot with The Society’s Heritage House committee to research the house history. Individuals are encouraged to participate.
- Provide a $750 donation* ($720 tax-deductible) via check or credit card to Northport Historical Society.
