Dear Neighbor,
As you know, Northport and East Northport are rich in history, with stories and places that define who we are. The Northport Historical Society and Museum is at the heart of preserving that legacy. On May 20, 2025, alongside the Northport-East Northport School District budget and trustee vote, a separate ballot proposition will offer you the chance to help ensure our museum's future.
We are asking for your support of a modest annual tax—just $3.10 to $3.74 per household (about a penny a day). This small investment would generate $60,000 annually, enabling us to grow our preservation and educational programs and meet rising costs. This amount will NOT increase until such time as another vote is taken.
Why it matters:
This proposition is an investment in the future of our community. As an educational and cultural center, our museum strengthens our community, boosts home values, preserves our character, and connects us all through shared history.
Who we are:
- Founded in 1962 by Marilyn Campbell
- Non-profit 501(c)(3)
- Housed in a 1914 Carnegie Library on the National Register of Historic Places
- Representing Northport, East Northport, Asharoken, Eaton’s Neck, Crab Meadow, and Fort Salonga
- Run by a small staff and dedicated volunteers
- Free admission to the museum
What we do:
Preservation: We care for 12,000+ artifacts, documents, and photos, housed in archival boxes in a climate controlled, secure environment, digitized and accessible in our Carnegie Corner Reference Library.
Education: From school and scout visits and exhibits to lectures, historic walking tours, and our new Kids Make History Cove, we engage all ages with local history. We have awarded scholarships, provided community service hours, and internships.
Community: We partner with other historic associations, local businesses and groups to support and raise awareness—honoring many with our Icon, Century, and Historic Impact Awards.
What’s next:
- Celebrating America’s 250th with new programs
- Enhancing accessibility for all visitors
- Launching an interactive digital history app
- Hosting exciting events—including an East Northport agriculture exhibit, a Prohibition Night at the Alcyone Lodge, Annual Garden Tour, and Annual Historic Harbor Tour.
I welcome you to visit our museum at 215 Main Street or browse our website: NorthportHistorical.org to learn more about us.
When you go to the polls for the Northport-East Northport School District budget and trustee vote, on May 20th, 2025, I urge you to turn the ballot over and vote "Yes" on our Proposition. Let’s ensure that the Northport Historical Society and Museum can continue to inspire, educate, and preserve our community’s heritage for generations to come.
Thank you for your consideration.
