Proposal Vote

Dear Neighbors,

Northport and East Northport are steeped in history—and the Northport Historical Society and Museum is proud to have been at the center of preserving that legacy for over 63 years. On May 20, 2025, alongside the Northport-East Northport School District budget and trustee vote, a separate ballot proposition will offer you the chance to ensure our museum's future. To be clear, this is not a part of the school budget.

We are asking for your support of a modest annual tax—just $3.10 to $3.74 per household (about a penny a day). This small investment would generate $60,000 annually, enabling us to expand our preservation and educational programs and meet rising costs.

Why it matters:

I know Northport and East Northport residents truly know and value their history and I believe that the continuous efforts of the Society have played a big part in that. This makes our community so special and sets us apart from many other towns on Long Island. A vibrant museum at our center only serves to further strengthen that sense of community, boosts home values, preserves the character of our town, and connects us all through shared history.

Who we are:

  • Represent Northport, East Northport, Asharoken, Eaton’s Neck, Crab Meadow, and Fort Salonga
  • Non-profit 501(c)(3)
  • Housed in a 1914 Carnegie Library on the National Register of Historic Places
  • Run by a small part-time staff and dedicated volunteers
  • An average of 3,000 visitors a year have taken advantage of our free admission and 1,200 people a year attended our educational programs and events

What we do:

Preservation: We care for 12,000+ artifacts, documents, and photos—digitized and accessible in our Carnegie Corner Reference Library.

Education: From school and scout visits and exhibits, to lectures, walking tours, and our new Kids Make History Cove, we engage all ages with local history. We work with several universities as well as Northport High School students to give scholarships, internships, and community service hours.

Community: We partner with businesses and local community groups—honoring many with our Icon, Century, and Historic Impact Awards.

What’s next:

  • Celebrating America’s 250th with new programs
  • Permits have been applied for to begin construction of the ADA compliant entrance, providing accessibility for all visitors
  • Launching an interactive digital history app
  • Hosting more exciting events—from an East Northport agriculture exhibit to Prohibition Night at Alcyone Lodge

I urge you to visit our museum at 215 Main Street or learn more about us from our website at NorthportHistorical.org. When you vote on May 20, please flip the ballot and vote YES on Proposition #4.

Together we can preserve the past to inspire the future.

Thank you for your support,
Terry Reid
